7 Local Oregon Waterfalls to Visit

The Columbia River Gorge is home to a stunning array of waterfalls. Some are easily accessible, while others require a little bit more of a hike, but all of them offer visitors spectacular views.

  1. Standing at 620 feet, Multnomah Falls is the tallest waterfall in the state. There’s a short paved trail that leads you to the Benson Bridge, which offers a close-up view of both the upper and lower cascades.
  2. Easily visible from the Historic Columbia River Highway, Horsetail Falls is a 176-foot waterfall that resembles a horse’s tail as it cascades down the cliffside. For more hiking opportunities, find the nearby trailhead.
  3. Punch Bowl Falls is accessible via the Eagle Creek Trail. This waterfall is famous for its unique bowl-shaped basin. The 4.2-mile round-trip hike offers stunning views of the creek and the surrounding forest.
  4. Tamanawas Falls is located on the east slope of Mount Hood. The 100-foot waterfall is reached via a 3.4-mile round-trip hike through the Mount Hood National Forest. You’ll follow the Cold Spring Creek through a peaceful, wooded setting.
  5. For a family-friendly option, check out Elowah Falls. The short hike leads to a wondrous 213-foot-tall waterfall with a single drop. For a longer outing, consider combining this with the hike to Upper McCord Creek Falls, which can be accessed from the same trailhead.
  6. The trailhead for Wahclella Falls is easily accessible off the Columbia River Gorge Highway (route 84). The hike is on the more challenging side, and we recommend an early start if you’re visiting on the weekends to avoid the crowds.
  7. Starvation Creek Waterfall is something of a hidden gem. To reach the 190-foot two-tiered attraction, cross a boardwalk found near the parking area. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the tables that offer views of the falls.
